The live-action adaptation of One Piece took center-stage at Netflix’s Geeked Week 2022 celebration today, June 6. We’re excited to share the new information with you, including the confirmation of additional cast members.
One Piece was first announced in January 2020, but there were no details on who’s in the cast, an official synopsis, and when the series will be making its way to Netflix. Instead, all that was revealed is that the series is officially in the works, with Netflix backing it.
This was really great news for fans of the anime series because some fans really wanted to see the anime adapted into a live-action version. However, the excitement quickly died down when there were no new updates on the show.
Now in 2022, we’ve finally received news on this highly anticipated series. We provide everything there is to know about the upcoming series, such as One Piece‘s release date updates, cast, synopsis, and more.
Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced an official release date for this upcoming Netflix original series. The cast has been hard at work in South Africa bringing the world of One Piece to life. That means it is likely still in production and therefore not done filming yet. Given that news, it sounds like we won’t see the series hit Netflix until sometime in 2023, probably the latter part of the year.
Yes, as mentioned the show is currently in production in South Africa. As part of the Geeked Week celebration, Netflix released a video to showcase an exclusive behind the scenes look at the truly massive sets and creation of the show.
Check out this sneak peek of the show’s concept art and sets below:
We have the names of the actors who will portray the Straw Hat Pirates! In a press release, Netflix released the main cast.
Check out the actors who will be playing the lead characters:
Steven Maeda is the showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the series. Matt Owens is also credited as a writer and executive producer. Tomorrow Studios, Shueisha, and Netflix, will be coming together to make this live-action series. You might know Tomorrow Studios because this production company is also behind the upcoming Netflix live-action series, Cowboy Bebop. And, of course, the author of the manga series, Eiichiro Oda, has signed on as an executive producer.
At Geeked Week 2022, additional cast members were announced!
Netflix has not released an official synopsis, but the live-action series is based on the manga. So the plot is the same. The manga is about a young man named Monkey D. Luffy, who sets off on a journey to become the King of the Pirates and find the legendary treasure, One Piece. He recruits his own crew of pirates along the way, and they call themselves the Straw Hat Pirates.
When Netflix releases an official synopsis, we’ll let you know.
The first season of the live-action series will consist of 10 episodes.
